2014 Riesling - "The Knoll" Lahoma Vineyards

Red Newt Cellars premier bottling, this is the benchmark for Finger Lakes Dry Riesling and as powerful and textural as the very best that come from Germany, Austria, and Alsace.  From a small, one hectare Knoll that rises above the Lahoma Vineyard, the beautiful and ripe fruit that makes it into this wine can be enjoyed for many years to come.

2014 Riesling - Lahoma Vineyards

Lahoma Vineyard Riesling is always overwhelmingly orange-fruit driven from the moment it arrives as picked grapes at Red Newt. This wine seeks to bottle that joyful fruit expression of tangerine and apricot every year in its most exuberant form. Modeled off the balance point of a German Spatlese, it is juicy to drink when young but has the sugar and freshness to reward cellar aging. An even harvest with several dry and sunny stretches that helped both for ripening and selecting harvest dates. The gradual cooling down of post-harvest into winter did occur slightly earlier than normal, around the third week of October as opposed to early November. A relatively normal growing season overall, the biggest concern being fears of winter damage from the winter prior. These concerns ended up not impacting the quality or quantity of harvest versus the long term average, however. Harvested on October 8th, 2014 and fermented in stainless steel, then aged on lees for 7 months prior to racking, filtering, and bottling.

2014 Pinot Gris - Curry Creek Vineyards

The 2014 vintage of Pinot Gris showcases the perfectly ripened fruit, picked on a cool October morning and tractored to Red Newt Cellars to enjoy an overnight cold soak before being pressed off. Aged on the lees for 8 months before being racked off, filtered and bottled. A dry, crisp fruit-forward wine has been sitting in the bottle since 2015 and it is drinking beautifully.

With the 2014 Pinot Gris, grapes, the goal is to respect Winegrowers John and Allison Santos' passion and the fact that their fruit bares little resemblance to a light and fruity Pinot Grigio. We aim to dial in the wonderful structure that make this wine a treasure in Alsace and now the Finger Lakes.

2014 Gewurztraminer - Curry Creek Vineyards

Curry Creek is managed to allow for maximum canopy area and minimal spraying. The fruiting zone is kept open to reduce disease pressure while the trellising reaches quite high for more leaf area and better ripening of the fickle Gewurztraminer grapes. The 2014 vintage is a bit drier in style than the most recent vintages of the Curry Creek Gewurztraminers, and highlights the bold spice of the vineyard site.

2014 Riesling - The Big H - Lahoma Vineyards

Lahoma Vineyards is located across Seneca Lake about three miles from Red Newt Cellars. This Riesling is exciting and racy with bright citrus aromas in the nose, a perfectly balanced palate with a luscious sweetness and edgy acidity, and a lingering finish of white peach and honey. The vibrant interplay of sweetness and acidity create a wine that is intriguing and pairs remarkably well with food.

‘the big H’ is named in honor of Harlan Fulkerson, the illustrious grower who makes Lahoma one of our favorite vineyards to work with. With a personality larger than life, we hope this off-dry Riesling lives up to both Harlan’s reputation and the quality and opulence of the Riesling grapes he delivers to us.

2014 Riesling - Sawmill Creek Vineyards - North Block 

Steps away from the "South Block" of this same vineyard, the similarities and contrasts of site and style are remarkable. A sweeter style of Riesling luscious fruits dominate the palate while the acidity of the wine allows for a lovely finish.

Inspired by the crystalline beauty and clarity of German Spatlese Rieslings, the Sawmill Creek 'North Block" Rieslings is the site we believe best suits that style of wine. With lower alcohol and higher residual sugar, the natural acidity of Sawmill Creek makes this wine wonderfully refreshing and feather light. Juicy when young but made to be aged for many years.

2014 Viridescens

49% Merlot 34% Cabernet Sauvignon 17% Cabernet Franc

Viridescens is Red Newt’s "Winemakers' Reserve" Red Wine. Where the Glacier Ridge Cabernet Franc or Merlot bottlings really accentuate the full and fleshy sides of both those grapes, Viridescens seeks more elegance, balance, and nuance that rewards careful cellaring and thoughtful drinking.  This wine represents the most elegant and age worthy red wine we create in a vintage with its ripe fine tannins and stunning fruit.
