Double bassist/composer, Nicholas Walker, and cellist, Elizabeth Simkin, are music professors at Ithaca College, in upstate New York. Their collaborative music partnership spans a decade, and includes duo recitals, chamber music, early music, contemporary music, orchestral music, and original compositions. This duo project features original repertoire by Nicholas Walker which the duo has workshopped into a hour-long, programatic set featuring tuneful melodies, atmospheric textures, lyrical virtuosity, extended techniques, playful improvisation, and fun grooves.

Kelby James Russell Wines Offers Two New Releases

Building on the popularity of  the KJR 2014 Dry Rosé, Kelby Russell announces the release of two new wines.

Kelby James Russell Wines first began as a casual brainstorm at Red Newt Cellars, where owner and winemaker David Whiting suggested that a separate wine project might be an important creative outlet for Kelby. With a diverse selection of vineyards and wine styles, the label promises to bring something new to the wine world; ‘off-beat’ wines both in reference to their musical inspiration as well as their individual spirit.

2013 Riesling

  • The 2013 Kelby James Russell Riesling was inspired by the style of one of the world’s great and overlooked Riesling producing countries, Australia.   Made with 100% Riesling from the Tango Oaks Vineyard in Seneca Lake’s Banana Belt region, it is a Finger Lakes twist on an age-worthy style.Following an even growing season and dry autumn, the Riesling was picked the morning of October 24th, 2013.  Following pressing and settling, the juice was fermented at a cool temperature using a staged addition of two different yeasts to enhance its crispness.Bone dry with an intense aromatic profile of lilac and lime, this wine was bottled under screwcap in July of 2014 and has been allowed to mature for a year in bottle prior to release.  Please enjoy this wine with a song as beautifully jagged as I hope you find this Riesling: “Maggot Brain” by Funkadelic.

  • Harvest: October 24th, 2013; 20.1 Brix

    • 14 day Fermentation with VIN13 and QA23 yeasts.
    • Aged in Stainless Steel tank for 9 months.

2013 Cabernet Franc:

  • The 2013 Kelby James Russell Cabernet Franc was made to be an unabashed, stainless steel-aged, dry red wine from its light color to its refreshing finish.   Made with 100% Cabernet Franc from the Nutt Road Vineyard at Anthony Road Wine Company, this wine was bottled in July of 2014 and has had a year in bottle prior to release for maturation.Following an even growing season and dry autumn, the Cabernet Franc was picked the morning of October 19th, 2013.  The grapes were destemmed and then cold soaked for three days prior to the onset of fermentation.  Pressed off after alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in stainless steel and neutral oak barrels for 8 months.This delicately colored red wine explodes on the nose and palate with aromas of raspberries, sour cherry, and wet rocks.  Please enjoy this wine with a song that feels as good as I hope you find this Cabernet Franc: “We Were Rock & Roll” by Janelle Monáe.

  • Vinification:
    • 72 Hour Cold Soak.
    • 14 day Fermentation with 3001 yeast.
    • Aged in Stainless Steel and Neutral Oak Barrels for 9 months.

Alfredo OyaguezAlfredo Oyaguez has performed extensively in Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Kosovo), Asia (Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore), and the United States as a soloist, recitalist, chamber music pianist and vocal accompanist. He has recorded for the Spanish National Radio, Radio France, Polish Radio and Television (KDB in Santa Barbara, California), and The Danish National Radio P2. Master Classes attended include those given by the Bartok Quartet, Oslo Trio, Muir Quartet, Tokyo Quartet, and the Julliard Quartet, among others. Oyaguez has collaborated with Agustín León Ara, Jesse Levine, Wolfgang Meyer, Jaap Schröder, Aaron Berofsky, Zuill Bailey, Andrew Smith, Smerald Spahiu, Andres Mustonen , Ramon Jaffe, The Parkanyi String Quartet (Holland), the Esbjerg Ensemble, and the Copenhagen Ensemble “Contemporanea”(Denmark).
He is currently on the Faculty of the Palma de Mallorca Conservatory in the Balearic Islands of Spain, where he is also the Artistic director of the Deia International Music Festival as well as the Director and Founding member of Camerata Deia. For several summers he has taught at the prestigious International Music Seminar on Spanish Music, “Musica en Compostela,” in Santiago de Compostela. Future engagements include Chamber Music Festivals in Germany, Finland, Iceland, Austria, Italy, France and concert tours in South America and Asia.

Andrew Smith 300Andrew Smith is an Associate Professor of music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the Principal Cellist of The Las Vegas Philharmonic. An avid chamber musician, he has performed chamber music concerts throughout the United States, and in Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Denmark, and Ukraine, as well as Peru and Brazil. He is an original member of the Camerata Deiá, a group founded in 2001 to be the resident ensemble with The Festival Internacional de Deiá, a summer festival in Majorca, Spain. He was also a founding member of The Adriatic Chamber Music Festival, a summer music program in southern Italy, where he taught and performed from 1998 – 2008. An active recitalist, Andrew has collaborated with pianists Alfredo Oyagüez, and Carl Pontén in cello/piano recitals in Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, and Japan, as well as in Kosovo, Serbia, and Macedonia. During summers, in addition to The Festival Internacional de Deiá, in Spain, and The Adriatic Chamber Music Festival in Italy, Smith has taught and performed in several music festivals, including the Marrowstone Music Festival, Festival Mozaic in San Luis Obispo, CA, the Rocky Ridge Music Center, the Blue Mountain Festival, Dakota Chamber Music, The Green Valley Chamber Music Festival, the Tuacahn Summer Arts Institute, and The Las Vegas Music Festival.

Launching with a Dry Rosé rather than a Riesling, Kelby James Russell Wines marks the release of its first wine this month. Started as a new project between Kelby Russell and Red Newt Cellars, where he works as winemaker, the label series will provide an opportunity for Kelby to make and offer personal, small-batch wines.

“Given my long love affair with Rosé, there was never any doubt what the first wine would be,“ said Kelby. “That it should also be sourced from 100% Cabernet Franc from the Nutt Road Vineyard, where my winemaking career started, only feels more appropriate.”

The vibrant 2013 Dry Rosé was spurred on by the sounds of Bob Dylan, the only tasting notes suggesting the wine be enjoyed while listening to “Leopard-Skin, Pill-Box Hat.” Subsequent wines under the label will also list a musical pairing as both inspiration and description of what the bottle contains.

“Starting this label will allow me to focus on a limited number of wines that I am most passionate about, inspired by the music I am passionate about,” said Kelby. “I trust what people taste in the wine, so I instead want to give them a glimpse of the artistic spirit inside the bottle.”
