Mayfest Wine Notes!

mayfestMayfest: Cornell’s International Chamber Music Festival

Red Newt is pleased to host sommelier Thomas Pastuszak for a special tasting and  concert this Saturday, May 20th at 4:30pm.

A tasting of six Finger Lakes Rieslings from Herman J Wiemer, Keuka Lake Vineyards, and Red Newt will be followed by the Schumann Piano Quintet, first movement, and two folk selections from Hungary and Taiwan for string quartet.

Why Wine and Music? “…’interpretation’ is one of the most important factors of classical performance – the written music is the same, and everyone has access to it, but what makes performances so different is how the musicians interpret the piece.  What if we applied the theme of ‘interpretation’ to Riesling and explore  individual house styles (each vintner’s ‘interpretations’ of Dry Riesling) and show just how different they can be?

This month, we’ll be focusing on three grape varieties that find a home in Alsace:  Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris.  At Red Newt we like to experiment and push the envelope that contains what people perceive as a Finger Lakes “style”.  In reality, the style of these wines is simply what we perceive when we peer past the preconceptions, and focus on the personality and expression of the vineyard.  Winemaking paths and vinification techniques within this group are diverse, inspired, and exciting.  And we are excited to share these wines with you!

…And we’ve paired the wines with a tasting plate designed by the Bistro chef, Jeremy Personius.

Today we’revisiting the vintage… This was a ripe and opulent vintage in Finger Lakes Reds.  Here are two examples that capture the vintage, and are ageing beautifully!
Serving tastes, glasses and bottles of these wines today until 6:30, or until they are gone.

2010 red newt Merlot
Dark smoke and hummus in nose.  Evolves to dark bramble and tobacco.  Palate is fruit driven, rich and complex.  Lengthy finish with fine tannnins, fresh dense dark cherry and black raspberry.  Beautiful and ageing gracefully.  Very limited quantity available.  Nearly all of this has been allocated for wine club… just a few bottles left for today!

2010 Lakewood Lemberger
Raspberry jam, quince and tobacco in the nose.  Palate is delicate but firmly stated with raspberry, black pepper, and well defined acidity.   Another splendid example of the 2010 vintage… and of the Stamps’ finessed winemaking!

Winemaker’s Library Wednesday April 19th, 2017

2008 Red Newt Merlot Tierce RieslingToday were looking back at the 2008 vintage… This was one of the best unsung vintages of the century.
Serving tastes, glasses and bottles of these wines today until 6:30, or until they are gone.

2008 Tierce – Riesling

OMG this nose is awesome!  Lemon,minerals, tarragon, and white pepper.  Palate is alive and electric with subtle, well integrated petrol, lemon pith and grapefruit.  Texture is tight, dense and fruit driven.  Finish is long ethereal.  A stunning FLX Riesling from an outstanding cool vintage.
2008 Red Newt Cellars Merlot Glacier Ridge Vineyards

Nose executive loses with dark berry fruit, smoke, and delicate earthy notes.  Dried figs and blueberry express as the wines open up.  Palate is dry, with fine tannins, supple texture and ripe fruit.  Finish lingers with delicate, silky tannins and ripe, mature fruit.

Winemaker’s Library Wednesday April 12th, 2017

2006 RieslingToday were looking back at the 2006 vintage… one of the best vintages in history for Finger Lakes Riesling… IMHO.
Serving tastes, glasses and bottles of these wines today until 6:30, or until they are gone.

2006 Hazlitt 1852 Riesling
Nose is understate poached pear and spice. Luscious apricot and pear on the palate. Sweetness is ageing out nicely with a clean and well balanced finish. Very nice… time to enjoy.

2006 Red Newt Cellars Dry Riesling Reserve
Nose is vibrant with crisp apricot, citrus and minerality. Palate is tight, crisp, fruit and fruit driven. Muted tangerine, under-ripe peach and quince flavors followed by a finish that is supple, plump, but with enough delicate phenolic texture to keep things lean and vibrant. This wine is a classic expression of the 2006 FLX Riesling vintage, and is ageing beautifully.

2007 RNC Gerurz Ravines MeritageToday is Winemaker’s Library Wednesday at Red Newt. Poured by these to taste, by the glass and bottle all day today. We’re here ’til 6:30!
2007 Red Newt Gewurz – Sawmill Creek
Rosehips, lychee. Palate is clean, slick and with kiwi and meyer lemon. This wine is one of the first FLX wines to break the 90 point barrier. Today is displays the elegance and poise of a well aged gewurztraminer.
2007 Ravines Meritage
Dark plum and raspberry in the nose. Youthful, with nicely integrated smoke and cedar. Palate is fresh and delicate. Primary fruit of plum and raspberry. Finish is delicate, supple and elegant. This wine is showing beautifully and will age elegantly for a few more years.

Winemakers’ Library Wednesday – March 29th, 2017

Wines will be available for purchase for the next few days, or until they are gone! This week we’ve opened up two terrific wines from the past:

2005 Heron Hill Dry Riesling

Medium straw yellow. Savory herbal notes complemented by candied lemon peel in nose.  Palate is fresh and forward with minimal petrol and elegant texture of lemon pith and marmalade. Finish is tight and refreshing.  Beautiful aged textures / youthful brilliance.

2005 Red Newt Viridescens

Blackberry and understated wood smoke in nose… classic Glacier Ridge Vineyard expression.  Palate shows delicately textured tannins, rich and smooth fruit, leather and complexity.  Plum, raisin jam, cedar.  Finish is long and delicate offering up dark plum, black raspberry and cedar. Gorgeous today, still has plenty of life.

2006 Anthony Road Dry Riesling

Nose of honey-lemon, kettle popcorn. Palate is medium weight with rich orange curd. Finish with slight citrus pith and citrus reduction. Showing well, time to enjoy.

 2006 Red Newt Cellars Dry Riesling
