Winemakers’ Library Wednesday March 22, 2017

All day on Wednesday, or until the wine is sold out, we’ll offer these wines by the taste and by the glass. Wines will be available for purchase for the next few days, or until they are gone! This week we’ve opened up two terrific wines from the past:

2006 Anthony Road Dry Riesling

Nose of honey-lemon, kettle popcorn. Palate is medium weight with rich orange curd. Finish with slight citrus pith and citrus reduction. Showing well, time to enjoy.

2006 Red Newt Cellars Dry Riesling

Nose of lemon curd, quince, and light petrol. Palate is fresh and quenching with bright lemon. Finish is firm and lively with luscious tangerine and a hint of pith. This wine is beautiful, youthful and exuberant! Continue reading Winemakers’ Library Wednesday March 22, 2017

Winemakers’ Library Wednesday – 3/8/2017

Winemakers’ Library Wednesday!

For over 15 years the Red Newt Bistro 2008 Red Newt Pinot Noir - 2008 Treleaven Gewurztraminerhas had arguably the most extensive restaurant wine list of exclusively Finger Lakes wines in the world!   With hundreds of wines from dozens of Finger Lakes wineries, the collection includes beautifully aged vintages… many of the wines in our cellar may not exist anywhere else.  Since reducing our dinner service in 2015, these wines have been aging peacefully… but it’s time to drink them.  We’ll be here until 6:30 tasting!

This week we’ve opened up two terrific wines from the past:

2008 RNC Pinot Noir
Leather, cherry, raspberry, and cardamom in the nose. Palate is fresh with delicate cherry jam and leather. Finish is long and understated. Showing it’s age beautifully.

2008 Treleaven Gewurztraminer
Honeysuckle in nose. Spy gold apple, honey, orange pith, candied orange rind. Finish is tight, fresh and moderately astringent. Still lively, and great to enjoy now.

All day on Wednesday, or until the wine is sold out, we’ll offer these wines by the taste and by the glass. Wines will be available for purchase for the next few days, or until they are gone!
Have a taste, enjoy a glass, take a bottle home !

Come on in for lunch…keep a watch out for our daily Bistro specials to complement these wines.

Wednesday, we’re openeding up two terrific wines from the past:

2004 Lakewood Vineyards Dry Riesling  – Lakewood has a long history of producing great Finger Lakes Riesling… looking forward to tasting this one with a dozen years in the bottle.

2004 Red Newt Cellars  Merlot – Glacier Ridge Vineyards  – One of the early single vineyard bottlings from our premier Cab Franc and Merlot grower.  The 2004 vintage vinifera reds were shy in the bottle early on, and have blossomed with age!

2012 Gewürztraminer Curry Creek Vineyard 86

Like the Pinot Gris from the same vineyard and vintage, this is a seriously ripe wine that is a bit lacking in terms of finesse and energy. Though more successful than the Pinot Gris, it is still too rich for my tastes. The nose is intensely floral, with tropical fruit accents. The palate is soft and broad, with low acidity and 17 grams of residual sugar. A phenolic edge on the finish adds interest. 17 grams per liter residual sugar.

2014 Riesling The Knoll – Lahoma Vineyards 95

An extraordinary wine, this is Finger Lakes dry Riesling at its finest. The nose is an exotic combination of kefir lime, lemon candy, mint, and thyme. The palate is just as expressive as the nose, offering a perfect balance between flesh and acid—rather than one swelling as the other dwindles, they march in sync from entry through to finish. A wine of remarkable intensity and purity, the 2014 The Knoll concludes with an epic finish of tremendous mineral depth. 5 grams per liter residual sugar.

2014 Riesling Kelby James Russell 92+

The nose on this lovely Riesling from Red Newt’s winemaker’s personal brand is as classic as they come, featuring scents of lime skin, green apple, white grapefruit, and wet stone. Though the nose is quite exuberant, the palate is fairly restrained, with a chalky, rocky feel and a super bright and guiding acidity. I imagine that it might yet blossom with a bit of further aging. With only 1 gram per liter of residual sugar, the wine is officially bone dry.
