WHEN: Tuesday, March 16 @ 7:00 p.m. Free & open to the public.

WHERE: Watkins Glen High School Auditorium; 301 12th Street, Watkins Glen, NY. (Entrance off the parking lot on the west side of the school, near the Field House)

If you care about the future of the Finger Lakes, don’t miss this one! Learn about the possible future extent of natural gas development in Schuyler County and the surrounding area - it will likely begin soon after the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation completes its Final SGEIS.

Professor Ingraffea has been a principal investigator on R&D projects from the National Science Foundation, NASA, FAA, Kodak, IBM, Schlumberger, and the Gas Research Institute. His research concentrates on computer simulation and physical testing of complex fracturing processes. For his research achievements, he won the "Significant Paper Award" for one of five most important papers in the category of Computational/Analytical Applications in the past 20 years, and he has twice won the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics Award for Research in Rock Mechanics.

Professor Ingraffea has received numerous awards for his outstanding teaching at Cornell. He has been a leader in the use of workstations and information technology in engineering education. He organized and was the first Director of the Synthesis National Engineering Education Coalition, a team of eight diverse engineering colleges. Synthesis developed, implemented, and assessed innovative programs and technologies to improve the quality of undergraduate engineering education and to attract and graduate larger numbers of women and minority engineers.

Sponsored by the Schuyler County Environmental Management Council.

Hydro Fracking in the Finger Lakes PDF Print E-mail

10-23-2004_9-12-11_AM_0007The recently released NYS DEC draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) is not adequate to regulate and govern the environmental hazards involved in the new drilling technologies proposed to access the natural gas trapped in the deep rock of the Marcellus Shale.  This document is inadequate to regulate and govern Marcellus drilling and it needs to be sent back and revised - it cannot be accepted as currently written.  Unlike conventional drilling, drilling into the Marcellus Shale requires millions of gallons of water and chemicals, the disposal and regulation of which has been poorly addressed in the new document, and has the potential to become a significant environmental disaster for the Finger Lakes, both with contamination of surface waters and contamination of aquifers and wells. The impact on the tourism and the wine industry will be substantial, as our scenic rural and farm lands give way to industrial 200' drilling rigs,  five-acre well pads and hazardous waste holding ponds spaced as closely as one for every forty acres!
We must act quickly to understand what we are facing and take action to prevent Governor Paterson from accepting the SGEIS as it has been recently drafted.

Most Controversial Tasting Ever! PDF Print E-mail

Andrew's Wine and Spirits, Oswego, NY  Saturday  August 15th!

Why is this the most controversial wine tasting event ever?
These four wineries came under fire for supporting grocery store wine sales.  While I felt that the legislation was one-sided and hurtful to current retailers, I was shocked when one winery owner stated that Andrew's Wine Cellar was the only store that didn't exchange angry words with them.  These four New York State wineries seem to have been attacked in others ways, as well.  For example, each company saw a significant drop in wholesale sales, one rumored to be reporting a 70% decrease.  Even though the bill to allow wines to be sold in grocery stores did not pass, there seems to be wine retail stores that still condemn these four wineries for supporting such legislation.  I, on the other hand, feel badly for these New York State wine producers.  After all, they still create wonderful products, and selling great wines is the number one priority at Andrew's Wine Cellar.  Furthermore, I know that the New York State wine consumers are largely unaware of this saga, and I want to help these pioneer wineries as much as possible.
With that in mind, I created an over-the-top advertisement campaign that spoofs old science fiction and monster movie posters.  I purposely chose a ridiculous and humorous way to advertise, so that the general population of wine buyers couldn't help but pay attention to the campaign.  Hopefully, the advertisements intrigued the consumer enough to sample wines from these four controversial New York State wineries, and ultimately decide whether a retail store should carry their products.  After all, the loyal wine buying consumers are the people who ultimately have the power to change things.
