As the wines from the 2007 vintage progress in the cellar, the
excitement only grows. 2007 will surely prove to be one of the most
dynamic vintages ever in the Finger Lakes.
Early on, we recognized the warm weather
and great sun to be providing optimal ripening conditions for may
vineyards. Now that the wines are finishing fermentation in the
cellar, and have been turned from sweet tastey juice into young
vibrant wines, mature flavors and structure are evident.
Some of the obvious starts are the vinifera reds, with Cabernet
Franc showing great fruit, intensity and color. Flovors of dark
berry and cocoa are emerging as the wines start to age. Ample
tannins at harvest are evolving into a firm, dense structure that
is fine and elegant.
Gewurztraminer is another standout. Two separate Gewurz vineyards
were harvested with sugar at 23 and 26 brix! The resulting wines
are dry, rich and aromatic. While the wines are still restrained
(that's normal for this stage of the game with Gewurztraminer)
they show promise to be real show-stoppers. I expect to be bottling
the Gewurz wines late in the spring with release after 6-12 months
of bottle age.
That's all for now... have a happy holiday(s) of your choice!
David.
