bill-fiddle1.jpgMusician and songwriter Bill Gregg Breathes new life into the rich heritage of American folk music. Ancient ballads are like multifaceted jewels set to the lush accompaniment of his fingerstyle guitar arrangements. Traditional fiddle tunes leap from the strings with rhythms that lift the spirits. His clear tenor evokes the depth and poignancy of the mountain laments and the raw qualities of outlaw ballads and rowdy Appalachian songs. But that is only one facet of his shows. Bill's original songs and instrumentals are built on the foundation of folk traditions, but create new music of originality and elegance. He crafts the lyrics to his songs with the same skill and care as the poetry he has published in literary magazines.

Bill was born in Ithaca, New York. He started piano lessons at five, sang in Ithaca College opera productions at nine and did his first professional musical performance at eleven. After a tour in the navy, college and the inevitable rock band he turned to performing and singing traditional American folk music. Along the way he learned guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, autoharp and dulcimer in addition to piano, organ and accordion.

Bill went on to play with (among others) the Wild Turkey Stringband, the Crystal City Stringband and became half of the duo Double Eagle with banjoist Sharon Bortnick. Double Eagle's performances included Bill Knowlton's Bluegrass Ramble TV and radio shows, the Miller Court stage (now Chevy Court) at the New York State Fair, and bluegrass and folk festivals, including many years at the Thomas Homestead Festival. He has been a featured fiddler at the Genesee Country Village's annual Fiddlers' Fair since 1983. Bill has also worked leading campfire sing alongs for the New York State Parks and composed and performed original guitar music for wedding ceremonies.

Bill is currently teaching instrumental music privately and at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts. He performs solo, with the North Hollow Stringband and with the folk and blues trio the Bluehounds.

Bill's acoustic music and songs are a perfect fit for occasions where people want an alternative to run of the mill entertainment.. He can offer quiet background music or a lively variety show. He writes many new pieces every year, so the music is always fresh and exciting. For special occasions such as weddings he can provide a variety of elegant and unusual music from beautiful guitar rhapsodies to haunting mountain fiddle tunes.

What People are saying about Bill’s shows:

Multi-instrumentalist Bill Gregg is well known for his driving fiddle playing with the “Bluehounds". In addition to being well steeped in the folk tradition, Bill has a passion for traditional and cutting edge instrumentals on 6 & 12 string guitar played in a style that is both provocative and introspective.

"My husband and I wanted our wedding music to be something fun and upbeat but also romantic, beautiful and original. Bill Gregg's original processional and recessional pieces were exactly what we were looking for,
as was his guitar music during our cocktail hour. A perfect compliment to our perfect day."..Brad & Sandy Lowe, Trumansburg, NY
