Nice Rack! Print

Hello again, Newt Fans!  The past few weeks have been extremely hectic here in the Cellar, so I apologize for my lack of communication to the blog-reading faithful. So what's been going on? Reds, reds, reds!  March is about the time when we peek into the barrels, and wake up the reds from their well-deserved slumber.  I've got to tell ya, this year's wine wasn't so much slumbering, as getting its beauty rest. What an incredible vintage!

Truly this is the best part of my job: Dave and I spent the last four weeks tasting through every single barrel of red wine here at Red Newt. We grouped several lots of each variety that showed similar character, then began racking and blending.  Racking is a process by which we remove the clear wine out of the barrel, leaving the murky particulates to be discarded.  It can be a little messy, but the wine really appreciates it.  After creating our blends, the wine all goes back into barrel to rest again until it's time to bottle.

Highlights?  Syrah that will knock your socks off, and a Merlot of such quality that may be unprecedented in the Finger Lakes.  Unfortunately, it will be many months until release, but I promise the 2007 Red Newt reds will be worth the wait!

Thanks to everyone who continues to write in - keep it coming!

The Cellar Couldn't Be Swell-er,
