Wine Judging. Why do we enter, after all? Print

Having just returned from a two day judging soiree at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition , I have been giving some thought about wine competitions in general, and have a few thoughts to share. Before I do, though, I need to say a little about the FLIWC in particular. This competition is the brainchild of Peter Parts and benefits Camp Good Days and Special Times . This non-profit organization provides a camping experience and more for children and adults facing the toughest challenges of life. Children touched by cancer, HIV/AIDS, and violence gather at the Camp Good Days recreational facility on beautiful Keuka Lake (Finger Lakes, central NY) to spark new smiles, re-kindle friendships and enjoy a week where they can simply be kids.

Over the course of two days yours truly and 44 other judges tasted over 2,500 wines to identiy the best of the best. The proceeds of entry fees, as well as the money raised by the following Gala Auction and dinner will serve to support the efforts of Camp Good Days, allowing kids to share universally in that experience. And so back to my original question of why we enter competitions? I've already told you about one great reason. Another...oh, check out that our Red Newt 2006 Reserve Riesling garnered a gold medal. A great wine, I must say. So, please take a moment to give it a taste. You won't be dissapointed. And next tiime you are by Red Newt, mention Camp Good Days and have a taste on me!

Drink Well!

David-
what better reason to get together to taste a few - OK, alot - 2, 500
tasting is a lot of tasting [how do you do that?] - Finger Lakes wines than to
help raise awareness to a great cause - the Camp is awesome - and allow some
folks to open their wallets for such a good cause. I see this as a win, win,
win. So thanks to you for the Judging and Kudos for the win!

I used to work
in Mendon, NY at a little breakfast place called Biscuits and Cream and the Camp
Good Days office was just down the road. The office crew would come in every
Friday and you could just tell that these people were doing great
things.

Thanks for the time you gave and continue to give to the growing of
all of our futures.
M.
