Thanksgiving wishes from the Newt
Thanksgiving marks one of the best holidays of the year in the Finger Lakes! It is the culmination of the most spectacular time of year for the area, FALL. We are surrounded by the explosion of color on the hillsides with the harvesting of wheat, corn, soybeans, cabbage, apples, peaches, pears, pumpkins, squash, potatoes, blueberries, raspberries and of course GRAPES! You simply can’t resist feasting upon the bounty the area has produced over the past few months. As the season comes to a close we have the opportunity to reflect on the past few months and remember all of the things that make this area so remarkable. Oh…and we get to do it while eating a fantastic meal (with hopefully an equally fantastic bottle of wine) with the people who we care for most. It’s not to say that these events cannot occur in other areas of the country. Unfortunately, most areas cannot duplicate all of these great items (and a few I may have overlooked) all in one place.
As I stated in my previous post I moved away from this area and have since returned to truly appreciate all that it has to offer. I find that I took so much of this for granted in my earlier years of life. Let us all make sure to celebrate this time of year and remind ourselves what makes this holiday a great one. Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours.
“The New Guy”
My name is Greg Van Ness and as of this October I am the new Bistro Manager at Red Newt Cellars. I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself to the Finger Lakes wine community and Red Newt guests and fans.
I was raised in Trumansburg, New York and resided there until 1995 when I made the move west to complete my degree in Food and Beverage Management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) go Runn’in Rebels! After 13 years in Las Vegas my family and I returned to Trumansburg to slow life down and raise our two little girls in a wonderful small town environment. We just recently purchased the farm next to my father and beginning the “process” of renovating the existing 60 year old house on the property.
My wife and I discovered how fantastic the wines and bistro were when having dinner here on our anniversary 6 years ago. We made it a point to have our anniversary dinner at Red Newt each year after when traveling back to Trumansburg on summer vacations. The experience was excellent each and every time we came. I knew that if the opportunity ever existed I would like to become a member of the Red Newt team when we returned to the area.
I dropped off my resume two years ago when we moved back and this summer when David gave me a call about the opening I jumped at the opportunity. The upcoming 2011 season is going to be exciting and I look forward to meeting you all in person as you make your way to Red Newt!
